Despite NTC had a century-old monopoly in Nepalese telecom industry, Ncell is outnumbering NTC these days. Ncell — the first private sector GSM mobile operator — is still the number one company in the mobile segment. It has more than 14 million GSM subscribers. It was initially known as MERO MOBILE, and later in the then year 2010 rebranded into the NCELL. On 12 April 2016, Ncell has officially become a part of Axiata Group Berhad, a Malaysian telecommunications group with its rebranding on 16 August 2016.

Smart Telecom Private Limited (STPL) is the third largest and fastest growing mobile operator of Nepal with a subscriber base of around 1.3 Million.
