A subscriber identity module or subscriber identification module is popularly known as SIM Card is an integrated circuit which act as a unique identifier for a mobile device. The major purpose of the SIM card is to store the international mobile subscriber identity (IMSI) numbers and other related keys.
SIM cards even have certain memory so that one can save certain contact numbers in SIM. All the Mobile phone GSM, CDMA, LTE or even satellite phone needs SIM Cards. It is a part of the function of a Universal Integrated Circuit Card (UICC) physical smart card. SIM cards are made up of PVC alongside the embedded contacts and semiconductors.
ICCID number, IMSI number, ciphering information and security authentication, PIN number and personal unblocking code(PUK) for PIN unlocking, all these information is stored in SIM card.
Types of SIM Cards
With the evolution of technology, the size of the SIM card has been changing over the period of time. There are various types of SIM cards exist and different smartphone uses different SIM card. Make sure which SIM card is suitable for your phone before purchasing the SIM from the mobile operator.
1. Regular SIM Card
The standard SIM card is also known as regular SIM. Older phone such as Nokia 1100, iPhone 3GS Samsung Galaxy II uses the standard type of SIM card. Sometimes regular SIM card is also known as Mini SIM card.
The size of standard SIM card is 25x15mm. These types of SIM card are hardly used these days.
2.Micro SIM Card
These days the most commonly used SIM card is micro. Essentially it became the pretty much standard SIM card. It has extra plastic around the circuit board trimmed off.
Micro SIM card is used in the iPhone 4s, Nexus 5, LG G4, Samsung Galaxy S5.
The measurement of the Micro SIM card is 15x12mm.
3. Nano SIM Card
The Nano SIM card is the smallest of all the SIM card. The size of the nano SIM card is 12.3×8.8mm. It is much smaller than the Mini or micro SIM card. In initial days there was a debate between Apple and Samsung for nano SIM card. Since Apple was planning to make nano SIM as new standard SIM card for a smartphone.
iPhone5, Nokia Lumina 830, HTC M8, iPhone 6s, iPhone 7 and 7 plus, Samsung Galaxy S7 all of these smartphone uses nano SIM.
Full-Size SIM Card
When mobile were first introduced back in old days, the size of the SIM card was the size of credit card. Due to the size of this thick SIM card, the earlier mobile phone used to be bulky.
